Call of Counter Culture: Mac Sabbath

Confession, despite how much I dog on high school and people who can't let go of it, I still hang out with my best friend from high school. When he's on his phone he's usually looing at random memes on imgur. Every now and then he'll scroll into one of those random facts pages. A random fact popped up once that said "There is a McDonalds themed metal band known as Mac Sabbath". Also displayed on the fact was a picture of a evil looking Ronald McDonald.  My friend showed it to me. I chuckled, it was pretty funny.  

Later that night when I got home I looked them up on YouTube.  I had to hear what these guys sounded like.  The video that popped up first was called "Pair of buns" (an obvious paradoy of Paranoid by Black Sabbath.  I was not disappointed (Link below)

The video was in mostly clayanimation, which totally resonates with me and my love for clay animation

 But the real life aspect of the video impressed me as well.  The costumes were very high quality, the music was mixed quite well, and the lyrics were extremely funny.  I'm not into new music these days, but I could see myself getting into these guys.  

Mac Sabbath claims to be the founders of a genre they call "Drive thru metal".  Their songs are all about very much fast food related and obviously based off Black Sabbath songs. Here's some examples:

• Frying pan (Iron man)
• Pair of buns (Paranoid)
• Sweet Beef (Sweet Leaf)
• Never say diet (Never say die)

The band members are all based off of McDonalds characters as well. But they have a much darker persona:

• Ronald Osborne
• Slayer MacCheese
• Grimalice
• Catburglar

I checked around to see if they were playing any shows and it turns out they were playing one in the Omaha area (where I currently am living).  My friend and I booked tickets and were in for a night of fun.  The merchandise that was being sold before the show was something else. It ranged from glow in the dark t shirts, coloring books, to a free post card (which I totally snagged). The guy selling the stuff was pretty cool. He was from LA so him and I had a lot to talk about.  

When Mac Sabbath took to the stage the crowd went nuts. I just wanna say that the show was extremely entertaining, and I don't often say that. I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time. These guys know how to entertain and keep things interesting.  Nearly every song had something going on. From squirting water out of ketchup bottles onto people, to fry kids running around on stage, and my personal favorite Ronald Osbrone laughing like Ozzy. 

These guys had high quality gear. I noticed Slay MacCheese was using a Tomi Lommi signature Gibson SG with cross inlays.  Not a cheap guitar for any means.  Double points for a having a signature guitar used by a former Black Sabbath guitarist.  

One other cool thing about these guys is, if you're familiar with any Black Sabbath song you're familiar with Mac Sabbath, due to the musical nature of the songs.  Knowing the lyrics will be reserved for the die hard fans. You know the kind that say "SO YOU LIKE MAC SABBATH?!?! THEN NAME 5 OF THEIR SONGS!"  

Probably my favorite part of their whole set was the fact that these guys were there to have a good time. They didn't take themselves too seriously. They were there to entertain, and entertain they did. They put on an amazing show and do a great job staying in character. It was totally the most entertaining concert I have ever been to.  - MCS1
